The Closing of Ashura Programme in Kano.

Khatama  of Ashura Majaalis in Kano. on Saturday, the 15th Muharram 1433 H/6th December 2011, a mammoth crowd, majority of whom are members of the Islamic Movement,

gathered at Markazul Islamy in Kofar Waika Kano to witness the closing (khatama) of the series of Ashura mourning assemblies (majaalis aza) which began since the first day of the Month. This year, all the units of the Movement in the metropolitan arranged to march to the markaz on foot,  each from an assigned meeting point. The brave members of Minjibir, an area far outside the metropolitan, had to march for almost 25 Km to
arrive the venue and on time.


In his remarks, the speaker, Malam Muhammad Mahmud Turi said that Ashura mourning is an established Sunnah because the Prophet was the first to cry and mourn for what was to befall on his grandson Husain (Ashura tragedy). Therefore it is wrong to rejoice for this contradicts the Sunnah. It was the enemies of the progeny of the Prophet who rejoiced and instituted same over time. Our people
inherited the bad legacy. The indefatigable Malam went on to explain the essence of the Ashura assemblies: Apart from practicing the Sunnah, the assemblies are a means to extend condolence to the Holy Prophet on the loss of his beloved. Again, blessings are showered upon those who attend such gatherings. From the review of the determination of Imam Husain (AS) and his companions at such assemblies, attendants would clearly see that this material World is valueless.

So we shall not sacrifice the hereafter for material gains which, in any case, are not even guaranteed. Again it teaches us the way to sacrifice all what we have even our ‘heads’ for the revival of Islam, for Imam (AS) had exhibited the peak of sacrifice with his ‘head’. We know certainly that our ‘heads’ are not as valuable and precious as his. Furthermore, Ashura assemblies provide us with hope for the acceptance of our repentance (taubah). The case of Hurr who was initially with the attackers clearly depicts this point. He firmly resolved to repent, did so and got martyred under the Imam. Another essence of such mourning gatherings, observed Malam Turi, is that it trains us to imbibe the attitude of patience in all our endeavours: We exercise patience in avoiding the forbidden, persistence on performance of acts of obedience and patience during calamities.

In connection with steadfastness on acts of Ibadat, Malam Turi cited the example of Imam Khumayniy (QS) who was reported to spend 70 years of his life waking up for night prayers by 2.00 am. Similarly he cited the practice of his Eminence Maulana Sayyid Zakzaky (H) who does the same. So he urged brothers and sisters to emulate same.

In the course of his speech, Malam Turi mentioned the impacts of Ashura on our modern times. The establishment of the Islamic Republic in Iran was catalyzed by the Ashura assemblies. Again, the
establishment of Hizbullah in Lebanon is another Ashura proceed. The current Middle east and North Africa uprisings could undoubtedly be linked to impacts of Ashura. Coming down to Nigeria, Malam Turi noted that we need a way out. Then he declared that ‘certainly we have a way out in what Imam Husain did at Karbala.’ We have to resist oppression at all costs. The way out is not democracy. We need a revolution like that of Imam Husain (AS). It is only Islam that provides such opportunity. It propels a person to sacrifice his life because he knows the high reward and esteem of martyrdom as spelt out in the Holy Qur’an. 

Malam Turi then made a recap of the events that happened at Karbala in a little detail. He drew the attention of attendants to the level of perseverance of Imam Husain despite all the inhuman treated meted out to his companions, members of his family and finally to him. Imam sustained from several deep wounds from spears, swords and arrows amidst being terribly thirsty. At last he could not sustain the wound inflicted on his heart by a 3-pronged bow. Blood gushed out profusely.
He collected the blood, sprayed it towards the heaven and made it an exhibit in the sight of Allah as testimony to the atrocities meted out to him. He gave up in the name of Allah. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un!. They did not stop there. The accursed Shimr had to inflict 12 successive sword cuts to behead the Imam. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un!

They mutilated the body and paraded horses to tread upon the chest. What a barbarism! Is this the reward that the Muslims gave to the Prophet who brought the divine message of Islam! Even a horse was saner than those zealots! It was reported that the horse of Imam had to kill not less than 40 people plus 10 horses before it finally retreated to the camp, only to be greeted with wailings from women and
children from the family of the Prophet! They knew that Imam was no more. Those innocent women and children were harassed, chained and taken captives. Together with the pure head of Husain and those of other massacred martyrs, they were paraded on a humiliating display around the cities. Yazeed bn Mu’awiya, the imposed ‘caliph’ who ordered the massacre was happy and even boasted that he was the real replica of Hindu since he has taken vengeance against the family of Ahmad. Hindu, Yazeed’s grandmother, sponsored the killing of Hamza, the Prophets uncle at Uhud and extracted and chewed his liver, raw. A cursed tree indeed!

In conclusion, Malam Turi expressed appreciation to the brothers and sisters for the support given to make the assemblies a reality. He prayed for the increase in reward to Imamul Asr (AF), Sayyid Khamne’i, Sayyid Zakzaky and all those who, in one way or the other, have contributed to the success of the programs. He prayed that may the Ummah take up the revolution of Imam Husain so as to effect the
required change in the society.
