PRESS STATEMENT: The world can’t forget Martyred Gen. Soleimani

Today the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and hundreds of millions of people from around the world are marking the first anniversary of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani the biggest Hero who defeated ISIS terrorism in Iraq and Syria. His martyrdom together with his close friend and fellow struggler, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on January 3, 2020 has added a glorious chapter in the history of self-sacrifice.

General Soleimani was the head of Iran’s Quds Force. He had just arrived at Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of January 3, 2020 when a missile fired from an American drone resulted in his martyrdom together with the deputy head of Hashd al-Sha‘bi (Iraq’s Mobilization Units) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and their companions. This singular act was in complete violation of Iraqi sovereignty, against international law as well as the UN charter (for what they are worth). As head of the Quds Force, General Soleimani was a senior official of the Islamic Republic, hence his assassination constituted a war crime. Donald Trump and those who carried out his illegal orders must be held accountable for these war crimes.

Since his appointment as head of the Quds Force in 1998, he was instrumental in mobilizing Muslims in defence of Masjid al Aqsa as well as the liberation of Palestine. He coordinated with Palestinian Islamic resistance groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad and enabled them to become far more effective against the Zionist occupation forces.

Not only that, martyred Gen. Soleimani was a champion of inter religious harmony between Christians and Muslims. This probably explains why a mass was held in the evangelical church of Aleppo, Syria to honor his Martyrdom. He played an essential role in the liberation battle of Aleppo against ISIS terrorists, who took delight in the massacre of Syrian and Iraqi Christians.

We decry the way and manner the US-owned social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have launched massive censorship campaign to sabotage the ongoing campaigns to commemorate the assasination of these Heroes in the fight against US imperialism and Zionist aggression. It is an affront against freedom of speech for people to have their accounts with such media platforms suspended just for even posting the picture of Gen, Soleimani, as it happened to many members of the Islamic Movement.

The political landscape in the Middle east is changing. Oppressive powers are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their hegemony. They are forced to resort to desperate acts like the assassination of General Qassem Solaimani or the top Iranian nuclear scientist Dr. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. What the oppressors fail to realize is that while eliminating top individuals may cause temporary setbacks, in the long run, their blood nurtures the resistance and leads to even greater efforts on the part of the oppressed. The future belongs to the oppressed. History shows that no tyrant has remained in power indefinitely. The days of US presence in the region are numbered. Can the Zionist entity be far behind? Certainly not, insha Allah.

On a final note, we would like to use this occasion to call for the unconditional and prompt release of our leader Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife as ordered by a federal high court since 2016. We also demand for the freedom of all others in detention since Zaria massacre of December 2015.
