In the aftermath of the unfortunate incident in Zaria from December 12 to 14, 2015 where Nigerian army brutally massacred over a thousand innocent civilians including children, women and the aged and buried them in mass graves,
all of them members of the Islamic movement in Nigeria under the distinguished leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky, the government’s response to it has been a deafening silence. That these things happen in a democratic setting is quite appalling.
Many a child was orphaned. A lot of husbands in addition to wives were widowed. Yet, with sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds several others are still languishing in unlawful incarceration. Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky has been and still is in illegal detention notwithstanding his deteriorating health conditions, despite the fact that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ordered for his immediate and unconditional release since December 2, 2016.
This is absolutely against the rule of law. It is indeed a travesty of justice to keep illegally in custody a victim while the evil perpetrators walk the streets arrogantly. How on earth would a democratic state be subjected to laws of the jungle? Having killed two-third of his biological children, a nephew and hundreds of his followers, burnt his elder sister to death, razed and destroyed properties worth billions of naira, the government now wants to kill Sheikh el-Zakzaky silently. The deliberate cruelty against him though continues to loom large nonstop.
Our catcall is against the illegal detention of our leader, our pride, Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky. It is against the continuous missing of our parents, our guardians; the golden apples of our eyes. It is also against the loathsome incarceration of our brothers and sisters. It is nevertheless against the seemingly unceasing violations of our fundamental rights. Stop persecuting us! Free our leader as already ordered by the court!
