Eid el – Kabir: Improving Social Ties through Charitable Dispensations.

By Mal Yusuf Abdullahi
In the name of Allah who states “They ask thee what they should spend (in charity). Say whatever wealth Ye spend that is good, is for parents and kindred And orphans And those in want And for wayfarers. And whatever ye do That is good, Allah knoweth it all” Q2:216.

Peace and blessings of Allah be upon His noble servant, our master Muhammad and his purified progeny.

Let me start by congratulating the Ummah on the advent of Eid el – Kabir, a very significant Islamic ceremony full of lessons with multiplier effects in the society.

The piece for this week is on the need to improve our relations with people in general – brothers, sisters and indeed everyone in the society. Man is not an island, according to a popular adage. So he lives amidst others, and therefore must learn to respect the existing rights between them. This is in line with the lessons behind his mission on earth which unfortunately many people are either ignorant or careless about.Allah stated “Behold, thy Lord said to the angels I will create a vicegerent on earth they said Wilt though place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name) He said I know what ye know not” Q2:30

Basically, Allah has created man to live as His vicegerent on earth. This means that he should run his life strictly in accordance with His directives as contained in the messages sent to mankind to the last messenger. It is an apparent responsibility for parents to teach their children the essence of this life which is to worship Allah alone and not associate anything with him. Allah stated“He who created death and life, that He may try which of you is best in deed; He is the exalted in might, Oft forgiving” Q14:42

Generally speaking, besides man’s relation with his creator, he relates with his fellow human beings. This relation is significant and very sensitive as a fundamental base for his destiny.  The life therefore has three stages; our present life earth, the interim stay in the graveand the life hereafter. The three stages are important but most important of all is the life here as the fieldwork of the two lives to come. We should therefore work harder to live as vicegerents of Allah in our relation to Him and with our fellow human beings so that we may acquire His pleasure and attain the greatest abode of His righteous servants in the hereafter. We should run our live absolutely under this principle and influence others in the same way.

Knowing Allah is a must and He is known through His attributes. The messengers have conveyed their mission on the expectations on man on this planet. Allah stated "They will say, yes indeed a Warner did come to us, but we rejected him and said Allah never sent down any (message); ye are in nothing but a grave error" Q67:9

On whatever capacity one lives in this world, he or she will account for his or her action. So the trial of life covers the rich and the poor, the scholar and the ignorant, the civil servant and the farmer just as it affects all and sundry.  So we must be very careful in our duty to Allah the Most High! Through absolute compliance with His command man gets pleasure of Allah at this life and hereafter and the reverse is the case with disobedience to His command.

Allah says “…. and whatever good ye send forth for yourselves, ye shall find it with Allah, yea, better and Greater, in reward, and seek ye the Grace of Allah; for Allah is oft – forgiving, Most Merciful” Q73:20

The pilgrims offer their sacrifice at Mina after which they finalize the Hajj. The precious animals are slaughtered as sacrifice for the sake of Allah as a highly recommended prophetic tradition. Although any of theeight categories of animals could be used, however, ram is the most preferable. And whoever is opportuned to slaughter, he or she is expected to distribute the meat to the needy and some for him and family.

Islam urged its adherents to participate in this worship and dispense the meat to the needy among theneighbours and so on. “They ask thee what they should spend (in charity). Say whatever wealth Ye spend that is good, is for parents and kindred And orphans And those in want And for wayfarers. And whatever ye do That is good, Allah knoweth it all” Q2:216.

In the same way, such meat could be packaged and transported to other areas where the need arises. Orphanages and Torrey homes should not be forgotten. This is very clear in the Islamic socio – economic system behind Zakat and Khums in Islam. In a famous tradition, the prophet said “The best of men is he who benefits the people”. He also said “I have been assigned to enhance the ethical practices”

Given the desperate situation in many Muslim countries like Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Yemen, Libya and Somalia among others, the need for the Ummah to re – assess its situation in relation to such provisions cannot be overemphasized. We have no doubt that Allah; the Just will bring an end to the persecution meted againstthem. And His punishment will spare no one among the culprits and their friends among the Muslims that are part of the unending conspiracy. "And they planned and Allah (also) planned, and Allah is the best of planners" Q3:54

The righteous and the wicked are rewarded accordingly. Allah stated“shallwe treat those who believe and do good works as those who spread corruption in the earth, or shall We treat the pious as the wicked?Q38:28. He also stated "we will give a pure and wholesome life to every one man or woman who acts righteously and has faith and we will reward them in accordance with the best of what they used to do" Q16:97.

We use the occasion to emphasize the lesson on brotherhood and unity of the Ummah as Allah states “And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves” Q3:103. “The Unbelievers are protectors, One of another; Unless ye do this, (protect each other), There would be Tumult and oppression On earth, and great mischief. Q8:73.

As we always observe, the strongest weapon of the enemies is the division they sow in this Ummah especially in the name of Sunna/Shi’a. So we draw the attention of all Muslims to take note of this so that they might not to be misled for working freely in the interest of the enemies as we can see how many are either knowingly or unknowingly put to. "prosperous is he who purifies the soul and failed has he who soils it with sin and impurity" Q91:9-10.

Generally speaking, Islam encourages us to honour all people not members of our religion alone. Imam Ali, the commander of the faithful was reported as saying “do not despise a human being; for he is either a brother to you in religion or a partner in creation”

The enemies of Islam on the other hand use all resources at their disposal to undermine the religion. They work around the clock and exploit all possible avenues in connivance with their allies to achieve their devilish objectives.

"But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is Garden, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits there from, they say why, this is what we were fed with before, for they are given things in similitude and they have therein spouses purified; and they abide therein (forever)" Q2:25

The encouragement to act for the benefit of humanity is not restricted to the subject matter but all aspects of human endeavors like health education but general empowerment. We therefore urge all brothers and sisters to put more effort in the activities that benefits humanity at local and International levels in line with famous tradition of the prophet “the best of people is he that brings benefits to people”

While praying for the repose of the gentle souls of additional pilgrimslost at Mina last Thursday, I wish all a hitch – free Sallah celebration.
