Between Dogmatic Uncertainty and Regressional Cynicisms

Mahfuz Mundadu
What they feared most is not just the dawn of the reality, but coming to terms with it. Yes they have goofed. And in so doing they have chosen the path of worthlessness and lethargy. It is a self-inflicted misfortune that the brave and the honest in their midst say it as it is: blame nobody but our selves.

Yet that is too much of a bitter pill to swallow by those with some blotted kind of pomposity. What happens when you put your eggs in one basket and in no time realised the stupidity of your naivety by being the laughing stock of all but one self. Yet the arrogance in them continues to drum it to their Alta ego that in politics, flaunting a flout is a virtue not some political hara-kiri. More so, one definition of madness is to keep on doing same thing yet expecting a different result.

Reading through the interview granted by Professor Ben Nwabueze to the Punch Newspaper dated August 9, 2015 I find it difficult not to arrive at the conclusion that the tribal bigots in town are truly possessed by the weird notion of superiority, inferiority and defeatism notion muddled in to a monolith of sort. What remains really disgusting and curiously appalling to me is how a supposed scholar in the noble profession where evidential proof is sacred can stoop so low and metamorphosed in to a rumor mill that celebrates compound ignorance. Somewhere in the interview Nwabueze says:

“There are also ideologies about governance, which are based on the Sharia or Islamic Law, which favour theocracy and other forms of dictatorial rule. There is the Caliphate system; and also the Sultanate system; these are dictatorial forms of government, all favoured by Islam.”

In claiming that Islam favours dictatorship the Prof. failed to substantiate his groundless accusations with any semblance of proof. Of cause the reason for his flop in so doing is not far fetched. There is simply none. To this extent we can only conclude that the Prof. is either talking out of ignorance, prejudice or mischief. He might have equally be having an over blotted opinion about his and himself that he probably assumed that he has attained such a position in the society where even his babble and gabble remain cardinal truth that nobody dares or cares to subject to a reality check.

In exposing the ignorance, prejudice as well as the act of insulting our collective intelligence, I will simply refer Nwabueze to the sayings of some of the most erudite and well respected men of letters Western civilization has ever produced and will ever remain proud of:

1] Hamilton Alexander Roskeen Gibb (1895-1971) A leading orientalist scholar of his time."But Islam has a still further service to render to the cause of humanity. It stands after all nearer to the real East than Europe does, and it possesses a magnificent tradition of inter-racial understanding and cooperation. No other society has such a record of success uniting in an equality of status, of opportunity, and of endeavours so many and so various races of mankind … Islam has still the power to reconcile apparently irreconcilable elements of race and tradition. If ever the opposition of the great societies of East and West is to be replaced by cooperation, the mediation of Islam is an indispensable condition. In its hands lies very largely the solution of the problem with which Europe is faced in its relation with East. – Whither Islam, London, 1932, p. 379.

2] James A. Michener (1907-1997) Leading American writer; recipient of honorary doctorates in five fields from thirty leading universities and decorated with the Presidential Medal of freedom, America’s highest civilian award."No other religion in history spread so rapidly as Islam . . . The West has widely believed that this surge of religion was made possible by the sword. But no modern scholar accepts that idea, and the Qur’an is explicit in support of the freedom of conscience." [Islam – The Misunderstood Religion, Readers’ Digest (American Edition) May 1955]

3] Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) Considered the greatest British historian of his time.“I believe in One God and Mohammed the Apostle of God,’ is the simple and invariable profession of Islam. The intellectual image of the Deity has never been degraded by any visible idol; the honours of the prophet have never transgressed the measure of human virtue, and his living precepts have restrained the gratitude of his disciples within the bounds of reason and religion."[History Of The Saracen Empire, London, 1870, p. 54.]Edward Gibbon added that Islam is "More pure than the system of Zoroaster, more liberal than the law of Moses, the religion of Mahomet [Muhammad] might seem less inconsistent with reason than the creed of mystery and superstition which, in the seventh century, disgraced the simplicity of the gospels." [The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, vol. 5. p. 487.

4] Jared Diamond Professor of Physiology at the UCLA School of Medicine; recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1998."Medieval Islam was technologically advanced and open to innovation. It achieved far higher literacy rates than in contemporary Europe; it assimilated the legacy of classical Greek civilization to such a degree that many classical books are now known to us only through Arabic copies. It invented windmills, trigonometry, lateen sails and made major advances in metallurgy, mechanical and chemical engineering and irrigation methods. In the middle ages the flow of technology was overwhelmingly from Islam to Europe rather from Europe to Islam. Only after the 1500’s did the net direction of flow begin to reverse."[Guns, Germs, and Steel – The Fates of Human Societies, 1997, p. 253]

5] Annie Besant (1847-1933) British theosophist and nationalist leader in India. President of the Indian National Congress in 1917."I often think that woman is more free[freer] in Islam than in Christianity. Woman is more protected by Islam than by the faith, which preaches Monogamy. In Al-Quran the law about woman is more just and liberal. It is only in the last twenty years that Christian England, has recognized the right of woman to property, while Islam has allowed this right from all times." [The Life and Teachings of Muhammad, Madras, 1932, pp. 25, 26]

On the issues of Boko Haram the learned Prof. did not faired any better. Hear him: “They (insurgents) have always stressed this conflict of ideology about governance and liberal democracy (which are) favoured by Christianity, and theocracy and other dictatorial forms (which are) favoured by Sharia and Islam.” … “When one looks at the destruction and the devastation perpetrated by Boko Haram insurgents or terrorists of an Islamic [?]Sect, one will see that they want to overrun and take over parts of the North-East not for the sake of it; not for the pleasure but to implement the Sharia…They (Boko Haram) are a local arm of international terrorists’ movement aimed at implementing the Sharia – ISIS and al-Qaeda. Boko Haram is only a local arm.”Nowthe question to ask Ben is: who then are the gangsters behind such a monster. Hilary Clinton says it to the whole world that the government of the United State of America is the brain behind the terrorist ravaging middle east and of recent, Africa. The Prof. may wish to follow this link and hear it from the horse’s (or should I say the mare’s) mouth: The learned Prof. did not qualify as an Attorney at Law by merely watching and listening to CNN, BBC and other Zionist infested Western media. In the same manner he can never ever by any stretch of imagination be an “Expert” in Islam, local politics and international relations by being a hostage to his prejudice.

“He [President Muhammadu Buhari] was chosen as the APC’s (All Progressives Congress’) presidential candidate at the primary for a purpose; to try to implement an agenda. I won’t go any further. His ability, his capacity to fight corruption decisively is constrained and restrained by some factors, mostly religious.”On this equally baseless allegation I will rather keep mute and challenge the Lai, Adesina and Garba Shehu to earn their pay.

Professor Ben Nwabueze may wish to find a better and more dignifying way of earning the trust and confidence of the people he is dying to lead. And to think that he can only achieve such by turning in to the windmills of the scoundrel is to willingly to compel us in to commissioninga study in to the arduous task of deconstructing theBugaboo of a “Buga-Buga” Barrister.
