Mallam Aliyu Muhammad Bajoga, one of the prominent Tijjaniya (sufi) scholars in Bauchi, presented his view during Ashura Mourning on fourth day in Bauchi State. The title of the lecture was ‘Ashura in the Books of Antecedents",
and during his lecture, Malam Bajoga had noted that it was only out of self-interest that made some Islamic scholars ignore the issues of Ashura despite reading them in their literatures.
According to him, "every scholar who read the books I have just mentioned will realize that the books are written by Sunni scholars,
which are ignorantly being contested by Salafi bigots. For instance, from the book of Ibn Taimiyya, you will see the points I riaised about
the issues of Ashura, and what occurred there from, nothing is hidden."
"I therefore see no reason to refuse to accept the truth from the books you so much respect. To me, the problem is being fanned by sentiment
that makes people believe that it is only Shias who commemorate Ashura" said scholar Bajoga.
The scholar had urged both Shi’as and Sunnah to unite with a view to promoting the ideals of Islam. At the end, he advised the Muslin umma
to note that the Ashura mourning should not be left at the hands of Shias alone, it should instead be commemorated by any Muslims who believe in the prophethood of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw).
