The city of Kano, Nigeria on Wednesday 10th Muharram, 1438 (12/10/2016) witnessed a mass gathering, just like many cities in the world, marking the annual Ashura procession, the Karbala tragedy and martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS), the Prophet (SAWA)’s grandson and his companions in the year 61 AH about 14th century ago.
The Ashura mourning procession in Kano just like many other Nigerian cities was organized by the IMN under the leadership of oppressed and illegally detained Shaikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. Despite the pronounced banning of all IMN activities in some state of Nigeria that include Kaduna, Katsina and Kano, the mourning marches were carried out in many cities.
Mourners, dressed in black carrying various flags, banners, placards as well as voicing out slogans and songs remembering the event of Karbala took to to some major streets in Kano that included Murtala Muhammad way, Ibrahim Taiwo, Kanti Kwari and IBB way.
The Ashura procession ended up peacefully only for Nigerian security operatives seeing their plan to stop the procession unsuccessful hired hoodlums to attack mourners on their way home after the mourning march, thereby injuring many with deep cut and wounds at varryind degree, as well as arresting many and taken to the Kano Central Police headquarters Bompai.
