The Ashura mourning procession in Kano just like many other Nigerian cities was organized by the IMN under the leadership of oppressed and illegally detained Shaikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. Despite the pronounced banning of all IMN activities in some state of Nigeria that include Kaduna, Katsina and Kano, the mourning marches were carried out in many cities.

The Ashura procession ended up peacefully only for Nigerian security operatives seeing their plan to stop the procession unsuccessful hired hoodlums to attack mourners on their way home after the mourning march, thereby injuring many with deep cut and wounds at varryind degree, as well as arresting many and taken to the Kano Central Police headquarters Bompai.
